You’re probably wondering if solar is really a good investment for an auto dealership in the freezing cold, snowy, cloudy state of Illinois. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s 40 years of weather data for each zip code, solar panels in northern Illinois produce nearly as much electricity as solar panels in the southern U.S. 

So why haven’t you heard much about solar in Illinois? Until recently, the state of Illinois was lacking solar friendly policies. That all changed in the fall of 2018 when the state put out a mandate to have 25% of its energy portfolio be renewable by 2025. 

As a result, Illinois now has arguably the best solar incentives in the U.S. These incentives include Solar Renewable Energy Credits, also known as SRECs. These SRECs have a fixed value as determined by the Illinois Power Agency and the payments are spread out over 4 years. 

The other major Illinois incentive is the Smart Inverter Rebate which is paid by ComEd, Ameren, and Mid American, which are the major utilities in Illinois. The Smart Inverter rebate is paid out shortly after interconnection. Factor in the 26% Federal Income Tax Credit, Accelerated 1st year federal and state depreciation the numbers and it adds up to the federal government paying for 100% of the cost of your solar project.
